Meet the Heat: Mari Carr

This is it. The last week to Meet the Heat.

And here to play us out is Mari Carr. She’s one of my favorite contemporary, erotic romance authors around, and as soon as you read her books, you’ll know why.

I’ve taken the opportunity to have a short, sweet interview with Mari. And I’ve added an excerpt of my fave Mari Carr book, Tequila Truth, to the end of the interview.

Here you go:

1) Why did you choose to write erotic romance?

I think the answer is as simple as I love to read erotic romance, therefore I write it. When I was into reading regency historicals, I wrote those.

2) Do you identify with any of your characters?

My heroines always carry a bit of me inside them, so yes, definitely. I try to create characters I would want to be friends with.

3) Tell us about your books:

I try to incorporate a lot of humor in my stories. I want my books to have a strong plot with dynamic characters and then I add the sex. I really don’t like books that are just sex, sex, sex. I have three releases coming out in the next couple of months–Saturday Night Special hits Ellora’s Cave on Sept. 24 and it’s an all-out romantic comedy (always wanted to write one of those, so I hope folks laugh!). Do Over comes to Carina on Oct. 4–and it’s completely different from anything I’ve ever written before. A couple takes an erotic trip down memory lane as they celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. On Oct. 5, Happy Hour comes to Samhain and my editor said it reminded her of Tequila Truth. It’s a cougar menage–very hot, very fun.

5) What do you prefer, beer or wine?

Both. First beer to lay a base, then wine.

6) If you had to choose one, which would it be: Vodka or scotch?

Neither. Bourbon with a splash of diet Coke for color. LOL

7) Who would you choose to have a menage with? (Yep, you have to say):

Hmmm….Gerard Butler and Jamie from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander.

8) Which is your favorite Mari Carr book?

Tequila Truth: An Excerpt

“What is your ultimate sex fantasy?” Heath filled the shot glasses with Jose Cuervo.

Colt grinned while Kylie groaned. “Christ. Surely we’ve answered that one before?” She knew they hadn’t, but this particular question made her uncomfortable. Quite frankly, she didn’t think her two testosterone-laden buddies were ready to hear about her fantasies. They believed her desires to be somewhat chaste. Silly men.

The trio had been following this same tradition since the early days of their friendship. Kylie initiated the celebration, calling it Tequila Truth, explaining that birthdays should be a time of reflection. The concept of the game was simple. The birthday boy—or girl in her case—posed a question and then each member drank a shot of tequila and answered. The only rule was the answer had to be completely honest.

Unfortunately, her attempt to bring deep introspection to her male roommates fell quite a bit short of the mark. They’d played the game since their freshman year of college and Heath’s questions always revolved around sex.

“That’s an easy one.” Colt licked the salt off his hand, downed the tequila and sucked the lime. Licking his lips, he settled in for a long story. He was nothing if not an imaginative storyteller. “I’ve got this busty blonde all to myself on a desert island. We’re stranded and she’s completely at my mercy. Begging me to save her and all that crap. She’s wearing nothing but a bikini top and thong, as all of her clothes were ripped off during the shipwreck.”

Kylie interrupted at this point. “Holy hell, Colt. Why do these imaginary women of yours always have to be blonde and stupid?”

Heath and Colt laughed, but she merely raised her eyebrow, waiting for his response.

Colt stopped laughing when she failed to join in. “Oh, that was a serious question? I thought it was one of those rhetorical ones.”

She grinned despite herself. Colt was the ultimate male chauvinist pig and, for some inexplicable reason, she adored him anyway. He and Heath were the best friends she’d ever had and she didn’t doubt both of them would lay down their lives for her. They’d mistaken her for a male—Kyle, not Kylie—when she wrote expressing a desire to share an apartment with them during their first year of college.

“So what are you doing to this blonde with questionable intellect?” Heath, as always, was relishing Colt’s detailed descriptions.

“Well, I don’t know if you know this about me or not, but I’m a man who likes to be in control.”

She gasped, as if amazed, and laid her hand on her heart. “No, absolutely not. I will never believe that of you.”

He grinned at her sarcasm and continued. “There’s some rope that’s washed up from the shipwreck and this chick is hot for me. I mean way hot. She starts begging me to take her.”

At this point in his story Kylie faked a bored yawn, but he continued anyway. “I grab the rope and take her over to a coconut tree. I throw the rope over one of the low-lying branches and tie her hands above her head.”

“Have you ever seen a coconut tree?” she asked. “The branches are miles off the ground.”

“Shit, it doesn’t matter what kind of tree. Kylie, will you let me finish?”

“Fine,” she answered shortly, pressing her thighs together. The problem with his fantasy was she knew exactly where it was going and she would be hard-pressed to hide her reaction. The idea of being tied up and left completely at a man’s mercy was certainly pretty high on her list of fantasies as well. Definitely in the top five.

“So I tie her to the tree with her hands above her head. She’s helpless that way and her whole body is mine to explore and possess. I pull the thong down her legs and throw it into the sea. I tell her on this island, she’ll always be naked, that she will never hide her body from me. I can tell she likes the way I’m talking to her, all stern and powerful and shit, because she starts squirming and whimpering.”

Kylie struggled to stop reacting in completely the same way.

“I tell her to open her legs and she does. When I touch her, the woman is dripping wet and hotter than hell. I nearly come in my pants right there because I want her so bad. I reach into the back pocket of my ripped-up shorts and pull out a knife.”

He paused briefly and looked at her. No doubt he expected her to make some smartass comment about the convenience of having a knife, but she was struggling to catch her breath, overwhelmed by her own arousal.

Colt, satisfied with her silence, continued talking. “I use the knife to cut off her bikini top and I have to step away because I’m telling you this girl is stacked, with a capital S. She’s got these enormous big brown nipples and they are pointing straight at me.”

He continued describing the woman’s body in detail until finally she cried, “Enough. I think we get the picture.”

“I’m not sure I do,” Heath joked and she sent him a nasty look. “Maybe visuals would help. I’ve got some dirty magazines in my closet leftover from high school days. We could find a model who fits your description.”

“Can I help it if I’m a breast man?” Colt asked the question with a look of injured innocence that fooled her not one bit.

“That’s a rhetorical question, right?” she asked and then lifted her hand in a gesture that said continue.

“Well, I was going to go in to detail about how I suck the life out of those babies, but I can skip ahead. You get the picture.”

“Hell yeah, I do. This fantasy is a thing of beauty.” Heath sighed with appreciation apparently enjoying Colt’s answer to his question.

“So once we’re both good and hot, I take off my shorts and tell her to wrap her legs around my waist. She’s holding on to the rope around her wrists and this woman is strong. She uses her toned legs and arms to fuck the hell out of my cock while she’s hanging there naked from the tree. She’s driving her cunt down on me hard and it’s all I can do to hold on to her hips.”

She swallowed hard as she imagined the woman riding him. Problem was the blonde wasn’t a blonde, but a redhead who looked suspiciously like her.

Heath adjusted his pants under the table without bothering to hide his arousal. If there was one thing she had gotten used to in seven years of living with these men, it was that they were always functioning at half-mast. She consoled herself with the thought that through it all, she was the one constant woman in Colt and Heath’s lives. Through college graduation and first jobs, broken hearts and promotions, she was the steady one, the reliable one, their buddy with boobs.

“That was hot, Colt, but not as hot as mine.” Heath poured another round of shots.

“So hit us with your best shot.” Colt picked up his tequila, clearly enjoying his pun and ready to continue with the drinking part of the celebration.

Heath drank his tequila shot and leaned forward. “In my fantasy, I’ve got this smokin’ hot babe spread across my lap and I’m spanking her full, firm ass. It’s flushed red with my handprint and she’s moving into my smacks while her arousal is dripping down her legs. She’s begging me for more and I’m giving it to her. So read on to discover more about her.

1) How did you get into designing cover art for romance books?

Actually, it was something that happened at my day job that prompted the thought.  They had let the marketing person go, and they needed someone with Photoshop skills to make some ads.  I whipped up a couple of ads that they liked and thought to myself, why can’t I do this outside my day job?  I’d been reading e-books for a while and thought, I should try my hand at this.  I started small, I made some signature banners, and some other lady that won’t be mentioned, encouraged me to make the leap.  Anne Rainey was a big help too.  She let me make a cover for a freebie she was offering on her website.  I then sent out a query to a publisher and offered to do one for free if they’d just give me a shot.  They did, and the rest is cover art history.

2) To date, how many covers have you designed?

I think I’ve lost count.  But over 100.

3) Which publishers do you design for?

Currently, Ellora’s Cave, Samhain, Loose-ID, Aspen Mountain, Lyrical Press, and Pink Petal/Jupiter Gardens.

4) Which is your favorite cover?

Wow, that’s like picking your favorite child…  Hmmm…  If I had to choose – from a technical standpoint, it would be As Timeless as Stone.  It has the most elements and it took the longest to create.  For sentimental reasons, I love the two covers I got to create for you.  Boys Down Under and Visiting Paradise.

5) So, you and Joy have a new venture. Tell us about it.

Joy and I started Author Design Services (www.authordesignservices.com) as a way to help new authors, or really anyone, who needed a new website.  We’re not a big design firm, but we wanted to give authors a chance at a decent starter site for a good price.

6) What would you rather eat: A a fillet steak, grilled to perfection, with steamed veggies and french fries, or a huge bowl of ice cream, assorted flavors, covered in whipped cream?

Can’t I have both?  But if I had to choose, I’d pick the steak.

7) What would you rather wear in public: A bikini or a straight jacket?

A straight jacket.  Refer to comment 6.  You really don’t want to see this bod in a bikini.  Seriously.

8) You’re about to indulge in a naughty menage. Just the three of you. Who’s with you? (And yes, you have to say.)

2) If it’s a pen name, where did it come from?

I won’t tell you that but I will say that Patrick is one of my hubby’s names.

3) How long have you been writing for?

About a year.

4) How did you get into writing erotic romance?

Jambrea Jo Jones made me.

5) What is your preferred genre?

m/m romance. It’s what I love to read most so that my first story idea was m/m made perfect sense.

6) Tell us about your books.

5) Which is your favorite out of all your books and why?

This one is hard. I really like all of my books. I’ll pick two. One is m/f and one is m/m. My m/f favorite is Magnus because it is military and romantic suspense. Two things I love. Magnus is hot and Emily is tough and rocks. The m/m that is my favorite it Retribution. It’s sci-fi, another one of my loves. The two men have to go through a lot to fine their love.

6) Which heroine/hero do you think most closely resembles you?

Goodness. I think they each have a piece of me I don’t think I could pick one who is the most like me. I think I would most want to be like Emily. She has a dream job and get to get down and dirty with the marines.

7) What would you rather eat: onion and olive flavored ice cream or fried grasshoppers?

Um…gross! lol I’ll go with fried grasshoppers. I think I could crunch through those pretty quick and I’ve heard they are a delicacy.

8) Who would you choose to have a menage with? (Yes, you have to say!)

My characters? Rock and Zander um…they haven’t been written yet so I guess I’ll say Kain and Rave. You meet Rock in their story. I picked Rock and Zander because they are both bi and I like my boys to touch. Kain and Rave are gay…they might not like me joining in. heehee

9) Who would you least like to have a menage with?  (and yes, you have to answer.)

The man’s voice sounded rough with tears. My heart ached for him. I may have lost an ex-lover, but he’d lost his father. I swung back around to face Charlie’s son. I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t. I looked at his face, so different from Charlie’s. Stewart had moss green eyes and dark brown hair caressed his brow. He had laugh lines and a tiny spattering of freckles along his nose. A far cry from Charlie’s stoic blond good looks, brown eyes and a face that didn’t look lived in. Something I remembered about Charlie. He didn’t smile often. I wondered if he was ever happy.

“I’m sorry. I can’t–I–” I ran away. Staying and listening to a stranger tell me Charlie’s feelings was too much. And what the fuck was he thinking, telling his son to come find me. Matchmaking from the grave? I didn’t recognize my voice as a hysterical laugh slipped from my throat. I had to leave, now. I couldn’t stay in this house any longer, too many memories nipping at my heels and I couldn’t let them pull me under.

Meet the Heat: Jayne Rylon

Ah, Jayne! What can I say about her? She is a brilliant, brilliant author, writes scorching hot, emotionally charged love stories, has mastered the art of m/m, m/m/f  and /m/f/m scenes, and is charting new territories with her m/m/m/m/m/m/m/m/m/m/m/f books.

Jayne’s releases head straight for no 1 on the bestseller lists, and tend to stay on those lists for a very long time.

JAYNE RYLON:

1) Jayne Rylon: Pen name or real name?

Pen name.

2) Where did you come up with the name?

I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you.    It’s a combination of my grandmother’s street name and my real name.

3) You’ve come a long way since we did the Menage and More anthology together. Tell us about your writing and your books since then.

It’s in no small part to you and Lorelei that I am where I am today.  The menage and more antho was a big part of getting my name out there.  I’d only had one other release before that time so no one knew who I was (not that I’m a household name today or anything, lol!).  I really appreciate the opportunity I was given to participate in the project with two outstanding authors who inspired me to keep going.

So… since that time, there’s been a lot going on.  I’m working on the Powertools series which is a collection of extended menage short stories, the first of which was Kate’s Crew.  Book two, Morgan’s Surprise will be out from Samhain in January with two more to follow.  In addition, I’ve been writing the Men in Blue series of novels which run the gamut from m/m/f to straight m/f to BDSM.  Plus, the fabulous Mari Carr and I have a four book co-authored series in the works for next year.  I’ve also been involved in the Cougar Challenge series at Ellora’s Cave with Driven and the sequel to that book which both rely heavily on international travel settings.  Plus, my first Exotika release at EC is coming soon!  And… well, like I said, there’s a lot going on. For those who aren’t asleep by now they can check out the books page on my site for more deets.

(4) m/f ,m/f/m. m/m/f, or m/m/m/m/m/m/m/mm/f. Which do you enjoy writing the most?

Clearly it’s got to be the mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm variety.  I mean, it’s even a sound that sounds good.  Plus, the covers are yummy.  What can I say?

5) Which character in your book most closely resembles you?

I don’t think any of my characters are like me.  There are tiny little slivers of things that come from my experience (no, not the good parts) like the places in my books–I’ve never written about a location I haven’t been to–or Alexa’s car in Nice and Naughty.  I do actually drive a silver convertible.  But, I like to think all of my heroines are extraordinary people and I’m just me.  Nothing heroic to look at here.

6) Who is your favorite hero?

Of all my heroes, I think I like Razor the most right now.  (That’s Razor from Razor’s Edge). He’s young, makes mistakes, has a crapload of stuff dumped on him and keeps charging through.  I can’t wait for his book to release (in November!).  I have a feeling Jeremy Radison might pass him up when I get to the next book in the series, though.  It’s one of the greatest things about writing connected books.  You really live with these characters for a long time.  I’ll be sad when I’ve told all the Men in Blue stories.

7) Who would you choose to have a menage with? It can be anyone, and it doesn’t have to be limited to three of you. (And yes, you have to answer.)

I have to answer?  We’re going to have to talk about your “friendly” interviews, Jess.  Uhhhh… Ranger and Joe Morelli.  Enough said.

8) Let’s throw you into the “Indecent Proposal” scenario. You and your hubby are struggling. Money’s tight. Reaaalllllly tight. And then out of the blue a handsome stranger offers you a million dollars to sleep with him. Would you do it? (Remember, honesty please.)

I’d go ahead and let the guy sleep with my husband as long as I could watch.  Oh, what, that’s not what you meant?  And husband, if you see this… I’m just kidding.  Really.

The fiery nymph on display in her luxurious bed made up for at least twenty of the boring years Conn Hennessey had spent in a dusty attic, covered with a canvas tarp. Her beauty staggered him. Her long legs, spread apart directly in front of him, granted him clear access to admire her freshly waxed mound.

Sweet gods! The need to take her, to consume her, tormented him. Doomed to observe, his eyelids refused to close as manners required. Forced to watch, Conn couldn’t even relieve his own arousal as his body demanded. Nine hundred years of torture had taught him any attempt to move was futile. No matter how badly he longed to wrap his hand around his throbbing cock, his arm might as well have been made of steel. It would not budge. The roar of impotent rage bubbling within him would never break through his mouth, forever sealed in that nasty grimace of shock and outrage.

Dana stared straight into his eyes as she inched the shiny material of her garment up her supple belly, innocently setting him ablaze. Her innate sensuality distracted him, pulling him from his fit of anger. Resigned to his fate, Conn admitted the situation could be worse. Her earlier phone conversation had been muffled by the partially closed door. The dread building inside his heart as he listened to Dana’s extended grooming ritual subsided now that he realized she hadn’t been arranging a tryst with a lover.

Though she’d never brought a man home for sex in her bed, she indulged in occasional affairs. Conn lived vicariously through the steamy stories she related to him about her limited sexual experiences, always devising ways he could have improved her pleasure. He stored memories for the long and lonely times when nothing happened, when his owner deserted the house, leaving him with nothing to occupy his mind. During those stretches of unbearable quiet, he fantasized about what he would do to her if only he could.

Meet the Heat: T/EBookAddict

Yep, EBookAddict is a real person. You might know here as Theresa, or just plain T. Or you might know her as the owner of a wonderful review site called, surprisingly, Reviews at EbookAddict.

When I first met T, she was only just starting up with reviewing. Now she’s got this amazing website, and several reviewers working with her, and she’s being sent books for review from almost every major e-publisher in the romance world.

I’m very happy to tell you I’ve interviewed T, and you can get to know her just a little better by reading her answers to my questions below.

Gee I’ve never been interviewed before this may go to my head lol

1) How did you discover the wonderful world of ebooks?

Reading Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooter’s series I fell in love with her characters Jules and Robin and I wanted to read more m/m so I went in search of more authors and sadly for the most part ebooks are the only place to find m/m romance, in my searchI found Ellora’s Cave and ebooks and the rest as they say is history

2) What made you decide to start reviewing ebooks?

Actually it is probably a very egotistical reason. I wanted to be able to tell people my opinion of books… yep I had opinions and I just knew the world wanted to know what those were *insert maniacal laugh here*

3) I know you have a personal preference when it comes to genres. Do tell…

Male/male romance! I love it. I am hooked. I think I always will be. I had hit a point in romance where everything was the same one way or another, and I was getting bored. Then I found m/m romance and even though the basics of the stories were the same it was something different, and well I’m not going to lie the hotness has a lot to do with it.

4) Tell us about Ebookaddictreviews.com.

I’m a control freak, and I probably don’t take constructive criticism as well as I should, so going to work for one of the established reviews sites just didn’t work for me, I had to be able to do things my way… So ebookaddict was born I could review the books I wanted and share my thoughts on them, and pimp…I mean promote the authors I wanted to. I had my favorites and I wanted to help in some small way.  It really started out as something more like a hobby and then some of the authors I would review started asking if I wanted whatever their newest release was at the time.  And that in my opinion was the highest compliment they could have given me. Then I met you ladies (IH) and you all supported and encouraged me and I caved and sent my first batch of e-mails out to publishers requesting to be one of their review sites. Loose Id were the first to give my small review site a chance to grow and for that they will always have a special place in my overly mushy heart.

After that more authors started sending requests and some smaller publishers sent review requests and I actually had to look for another reviewer to help me out. That was serious WOW moment for me. I could not believe I had grown that much. In the last month I’ve actually had to bring on even more reviewers to help with the review requests and I transitioned over to website. I’m still wondering why I did this, but I just woke up one morning and decided it was time and thanks to the help of Author Design Services we got it done and went live in under a week. Yes I really work that way once I’ve made up my mind to something. I just do it. God help the rest of the world when I’m on mission. I could seriously go on and on I love talking about Ebook Addict Reviews. It is my baby, but I’ll spare you all the baby picture J LOL

5) How would an author get you to review his/her book?

If they send an e-mail to me at ebookaddict@bellsouth.net with the name of the book they’d like reviewed, along with the blurb, we will do our best to match their book with one of our reviewers. Once we have a reviewer for the book I will send them an e-mail requesting the book.

6) Who would you choose to have a menage with? (Yes, you have to answer. Both Anne and Lexxie did. )

Hmmm… First let me say I love you Mikey (that is my husband) But I want to have a ménage with Joe Morelli and Ranger. *sigh* Yep, you guessed it folks I am a Stephanie Plum junkie. Joe and Ranger are my heroes!

7) Who are the last two people on earth you’d choose to have a threesome with?

Hmm I’m not really sure I know… I mean if I wouldn’t have a threesome with them should I really know who they’d be J LMAO Actually I could think of two people but I’m SO SO SO not going there so um… on to the next question….

8) The best review you’ve ever written. Wanna share it?

I’m not sure I know what my best one is, or I’m the one to ask, but two books come to mind. Maybe not as my best reviews, but as two of my favorite reads. You can read each review by clicking on them. Texas Surrender by Claire Thompson and More by Sloan Parker. These two reads make an impression that sticks with you. I’d like to think my reviews did them justice, but I guess that is a decision the reader would have to make.
